What is International Human Rights Day?
International Human Rights Day is a day to reflect on the human rights that have been gained all across the world. It’s also a great time to think about human rights challenges certain groups of people still face and how to overcome them.
International Human Rights Day falls on December 10 because it was on that special day in 1948 that the UN adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
During International Human Rights Day in Cambodia, various leaders, governmental and private sector are invited to speak at events. The general message at these events focuses on themes that continue promoting the improvement of human rights.
There will generally be a major event hosted in Phnom Penh, at the National Stadium, and several smaller events in other large Cambodian cities.
What happens and what should you do during International Human Rights Day in Cambodia?
There are many ways that you can go about celebrating International Human Rights Day in Cambodia, but all of them have a similar goal: to raise awareness about the struggles of men and women whose human rights are being violated.
If you’re in Phnom Penh at the time, head over to the National Stadium to see the speeches that both elected and royal leaders of Cambodia will give. You will most likely also see the heads of important human rights organizations and members of the UN participating and giving speeches.
We suggest that you use this day to reflect on the horrendous violations of human rights that occurred during the Khmer Rouge genocide not too long ago. If in Phnom Penh, go and visit the Killing Fields and Toul Sleng Genocide Museum.
